Google DeepMind Scholarship: The application is open for the 2024 Google DeepMind AI for Science Masters scholarship at AIMS South Africa. Applications are open to African students interested in mathematics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning. We are searching for students who are fascinated by the stars and the world around them and want to use their talents to advance scientific research.
About the AI for Science Masters Scholarship
AI for Science is a track within AIMS South Africa’s Master’s degree in Mathematical Science, made available through a collaboration with Google DeepMind. The program is located at the intriguing crossroads of AI and the sciences. This excellent program began with the first intake of students in September 2023.

Requirements for the AIMS Google DeepMind Scholarship
Below are prerequisites to be considered eligible for the AIMS scholarship:
- be a resident in Africa at time of application,
- be a citizen of any country in Africa,
- have completed a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree with an honours year by August 2024 (or December 2024 for southern African applicants; see FAQ),
- not have held a previous scholarship to study at an AIMS centre.
Your undergraduate degree could be in physics, mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or any other field with a significant computational and mathematical component.
Enrolling as a Master’s degree student in South Africa requires the completion of either a four-year undergraduate degree or a three-year undergraduate degree plus an additional honours year.
Documents Required for AIMS Scholarship
The below mentioned documents are to be uploaded online during registration:
- Your curriculum vitae
- A motivation letter of around 500 words
- Academic transcripts
- Written mathematics questions (to be found on the application site)
- Coding problem (to be found on the application site)
NOTE: The online application has a dozen brief math questions and one coding assignment. It is not an exam, but the questions help the selection panel understand how you handle challenges. A full application cannot be completed at the last minute; therefore, we encourage prospective DeepMind Scholars at AIMS South Africa to begin applying early!
